The body digests and absorbs hypoallergenic formulas like Neocate differently than standard formulas. That can mean a difference in stool consistency and may result in looser stools for the first few days as the body adjusts to Neocate.
Neocate does not cause constipation, however it might slow down the frequency of your baby's bowel movement as the body digests and absorbs most of its content meaning there is little waste to pass.
Gas can also be more noticeable in the first few days as the body might need to adjust to the new formula, usually this subsides within a week. If you notice that the issue persist then please ask your paediatrician.
One reason is for gastroesophageal reflux. If your child suffers from reflux, the physician may recommend thickening her formula or bottle-fed breast milk by adding a small amount of rice cereal. This practice is somewhat controversial. Some physicians recommend it and others feel that it can actually worsen reflux for some infants. It also dilutes the nutrient content of formula or breast milk.
Thickening bottle feedings is shown to reduce vomiting but there are mixed results in terms of its effect on reflux itself. Every baby is unique and for some babies, thickening with rice cereal is seen to be helpful.
Neocate will last for 30 days after the can has been opened.
You may try to mix Neocate with previously used formula or breastmilk to easy your baby into the taste of Neocate. Alternatively, you may add 1-2 teaspoons of pure unpreserved vanilla essence and gradually reduce the amount of essence. We recommend you speak with your dietitian or paediatrician about an appropriate essence or flavouring agent to use.
